How Do You Rename a Pattern? Are Mac users SOL?

Greetings,

I've been trying to use Hydrogen for 3 weeks now (a Mac user) and so far all I really have been able to do is create and save new projects and manually punch in drum patterns.

My main concern is renaming patterns to reduce the chance of programming the same or similar drum patterns over and over. I have not been able to do this. The patterns seem easy enough to rename--like most files--double click on it so you can rewrite over the default text and BOOM--you're done. Not so in this case.

With almost no exceptions, (none that I can think of anyway) every single thing in any and all tutorials I've found do NOT WORK for me when I try them. Sometimes the things being described in the help sections don't even match what I'm looking at.

I don't even care if all I ever do is use Hydrogen as a way of learning the structure of certain drum patterns and beats and have it work as little more than a glorified metronome. But I can barely even do THAT.

Did Hydrogen stop developing its version for Mac a long time ago and simply give up on it? Because that's the way it seems.

I do realize this is a Linux based program and that the Mac version is experimental, (and that it's FREE) but there should be ample warning as to what a Mac user is getting themselves into before investing time in getting to know Hydrogen and becoming attached to it, only to find out it's a dead end.

I couldn't even get my account set up the first time around. I gave up. It wasn't until today when I tried again to create an account and I discovered apparently my account HAD been created (so here I am).  I'm not new to this sort of thing. I've created user accounts on dozens and dozens of web sites over the past 17 years or so.

I'd appreciate any help I can get. I'd like to talk this program up but I can only recommend it as an aweseome metronome until my experience improves vastly.

Oh, and I forgot to mention--I'm using the most recent Mac OS and the most recent version of Firefox.

And none of my help searches on this site work either. I keep getting told I have to use at least "one positive keyword".  Frustrating.

Hi FryingPan9

Hydrogen is indeed being created on linux but we do provide installers for OSX and Windows if time permits

What version of hydrogen are you using?  0.9.6 has just been released, so it is _possible_ (but again, no promises) that OSX/Win installers will follow in the next couple of months

about the site: we are aware of the fact that some of the functions currently dont work or dont work well.  and upgrade is needed, but time is limited.  we hope to solve this ASAP, but for now if you have any questions, just post them on the forum and we'll do our best to help you

grtz

Hi,

actually i'm doing a great share of my hydrogen development on OS X, i would say even more then on linux. It would be helping  if you could report any issue to our bug tracker (if it is not beeing reported already): https://github.com/hydrogen-music/hydrogen/issues.

It is true that the installers are outdated, as well as the forum technology is buggy. Please understand that this is an open source project, carried out by people in their free time. It takes me sth. like 10 hours to assemble and test a new installer for OS X, and even more time if there is some problem with the external libraries we're using. It takes even more time to prepare the windows installer.

Hi,

I have less than 3 minutes but just wanted to thank you both for your timely, patient and thoughtful responses.

I will come back and read more carefully and respond as needed/if needed.

Cheers!

I am using version 0.9.6-beta1 (which I suppose, now that I think of it means that it's being . . . beta tested)?

It wasn't long after I posted my first comment that the person who told me about Huydrogen and recommended it to me gave me a brief education about the world of open source projects.  I know better now.  I think he was trying to save me money or something, or maybe I'm more serious than I realized or communicated to him.  Whatever.

It seems as if I need to give this version some time. And I'll try to remember the bug tracker.

I still love it as an easy to turn on and use metronome on steroids, as well as for progaming basic drum charts and beats.  That aspect is WAY easier than the equivalent of GarageBand (based on my experience).

Anyway, does anyone know how to tell me now to rename patterns?  Maybe there's more than one way like other platforms?  I'm wondering if something might work.

Thanks!

to rename a pattern you just need to double-click it and the name becomes editable

this doesnt work for you ?

No, it doesn't.  Let me go try it again right now -- just rebooted--not that it's the first time since I discovered the problem, but . . .

. . . Nope. Just tried it again. Easy to rename, impossible to get the new name to stay. It disappears as soon as I click away or move out of the title "bar" or whatever it's called.

Thank you.

after you change the name you should hit enter, not click away

Ah!  Sounds logical.  Let me  go try that right now . . .

And of course it works.

Thanks so much!

This is great! Now I can name all of the basic drum patterns I'm learning and arrange them in whatever order makes the most sense.

I look forward to learning more.  As you can tell I don't always have a large reserve in the common sense department.

Hit "Enter". What a concept . . .
