Can't change sound system from "auto"

Hello.

I'm new to this forum. I have been learning the very basics of Hydrogen. It took me some time to see how to get it to sound through my usb headset. It was done via "audio system". I had to do it everytime after opening the program but that was ok.

One day I couldn't change the sound system. It would go back to "auto" after hitting ok and reopening the settings box. I tried selecting other options like jack and portaudio but it still went back to "auto", even after restarting the program. Even after restarting the laptop.

I don't know what's happening. I don't know why it won't let me change the setting. I don't know what to do. I tried googling but everything I found was related to "jack" and I'm not using anything "jack".

As soon as I got the bare basics I started working on something and I won't be able to continue until I solve this problem. I can still hear hydrogen through the laptop speakers but the volume is very low so I really need to use the headset. Help please.

Thanks in advance.

I can't believe how lucky I am!

I'm not really sure what I did, but I set the built in speakers to "off" from Volume Control, restarted the laptop,  then I went to hydrogen and selected portaudio and restarted again and now I can hear through the headphones again. Sometimes the sound comes kind of broken, but I prefer that to not being able to use my headphones at all.

If you have no idea  what jack is you should be able to set the sound system to alsa. Also check alsa mixer for the volume !

I have the same problem.

I've got Hydrogen 0.9.6 installed (BTW Beta since 2011?). It used to play nicely through Logitech AudioHub speakers, but now it doesn't. Pavucontrol doesn't show it in Playback at all, whereas every other application shows. Available options under Audio System are Auto, Jack (I have 3.1.1), Alsa and PulseAudio, and whatever I choose there Auto sticks. I even purged Hydrogen completely and reinstalled it, and still no go.

Can someone point me (us) to the right direction?

Thanks in advance

Update:

I run Hydrogen from shell, and pasted the output to http://pastebin.com/xL47ZPcw

Thanks

Maybe you could try something like what I did?

hi all

if i'm not mistaken this is a known issue

you can fix it like this :

- open the hydrogen config file (~/.hydrogen/hydrogen.conf)

- search for the <audio_driver> tag

- if you want to use Jack it should look like this : <audio_driver>Jack</audio_driver>

if it is set to 'auto', you can simply change it to 'Jack' and save the file

reboot hydrogen and you should now see that jack is the selected audio driver

Hi Thijs

Thank you again. Selecting Alsa or PortAudio brings Hydrogen to pavucontrol, and I can choose my external speakers.

Cheers
