Song mode does not show patterns as they come

Hey guys, long time user, thank you for this great software. Here is a problem that has happened to me several times and really puzzles me:

after some time using Hydrogen normally, at some point the song mode stops working properly; the pattern screen gets stuck in whatever pattern I last chose, and the song does sound when I press play, but the pattern screen no longer switches from one pattern to the next appropriately as they are being played. The playhead shows up in the patern screen when the selected pattern happens to be the one that is being played, and the rest of the time disappears, and the pattern stays there frozen, does not move to the next currently being played, or any other for that matter, unless I select other pattern manually with the mouse.

I found in this forum a couple of issues that might be similar to this (I didn't fully understood them), which turned out to be related to using stacked patern mode instead of single pattern mode. I don't understand what those modes do, I tried changing and changing from one to another without the least effect on this problem (I don't use midi, by the way).

Another peculiar thing about this problem is that I've tried making a fresh install of Hydrogen (version 094, then version 095, I tried 096 but the compiling process fell into dependencies hell), and this problem continues after the new installs! But even worse: I've tried fresh installs of my distro itself (Puppy Studio 33, which comes with H094), and the problem goes on!!!

Is this a known issue? Do you have any ideas about what can I do? Maybe is there some Hydrogen settings persistent folder that I have to delete? Idk... any suggestion is highly appreciated, it is horrible being stuck in this and cannot be cranking out tunes... thx

Hi Palmiro!

Hm, i need some more details to understand your problem... If you start up hydrogen and load this particular song, does it happen immediately? If not, what do you need to do to make it happen? Does it happen on all songs?

Hydrogen has its configuration in /home/Username/.hydrogen/hydrogen.conf.  If you want to make sure that you're starting with a clean config, you can just rename the folder /home/Username/.hydrogen to sth. like .hydrogen2.

Hi Mauser, thank you for your reply. Regarding your suggestion on the configuration file, I cannot access my computer till Monday, I'll check those folders then to see if they make any difference - fingers crossed... Btw, could I try just deleting them and Hydrogen would regenerate them, or that would just screw things up even more?

As for your other question, yes, this problem starts immediately, every time, right after firing Hydrogen; rereading my post, when I said "at some point the song mode stops working properly", what I meant was "at some point in time after many days of working properly". But once this problem appears, it's an all or nothing thing: it happens every time I open Hydrogen, from the moment it's open, and with all Hydrogen song files.

Hi Palmiro!

Ok, this sounds like a strange problem. But i'm positive that we can figure out what the problem is...

The configration file will be re-created with default values if hydrogen can't find it.. But keep in mind that the folder .hydrogen keeps also your drumkits, so you should really make a backup first. It would be great if you could post your hydrogen config file (hydrogen.conf) to https://gist.github.com/ . And maybe you could also post a screenshot of hydrogen when the strange behaviour is happening. And if you're not demotivated by all that, you could also create a bug in our bugtracker (https://github.com/hydrogen-music/hydrogen/issues), this makes it easier for us to keep the overview :)

Thank you for your pointers. I think I've done everything now. In order of appearance...

The configration file will be re-created with default values if hydrogen can't find it.. But keep in mind that the folder .hydrogen keeps also your drumkits, so you should really make a backup first.

I tried both renaming and deleting (no fret about drumkits, as I use only the ones that come with the program) /root/.hydrogen, then reinstalling Hydrogen. No change in the behavior of the problem.

It would be great if you could post your hydrogen config file (hydrogen.conf) to https://gist.github.com/ .

Here it is: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/e7ea8967e9b4624ac7e6

And maybe you could also post a screenshot of hydrogen when the strange behaviour is happening.

There you go two thousand words (sorry I couldn't attach the images to this post - the image widget didn't seem to work, so I rather provide the links, just in case):

Finally,

you could also create a bug in our bugtracker (https://github.com/hydrogen-music/hydrogen/issues)

There it is: https://github.com/hydrogen-music/hydrogen/issues/239

Hopefully there's something terribly wrong in my configuration file, or something else that fires some lightbulb somewhere... thank you for your suggestions...

From GitHub:

i dindnt know that hydrogen ever did that ?
i have never seen the pattern editor jump to another pattern while playing a song

I've checked a lot of Hydrogen videos and, indeed, Hydrogen song mode does not move from one pattern to another. I don't know what's happenning here

All I can say at the moment is sorry. Maybe what I took for an 'error' was the disappearance of those triangles that appear by the names of the patterns... maybe such triangles are available in some Hydrogen versions and not others? It's all I can think of I'm very confused.  I really would have sworn that Hydrogen's song mode shifted the patterns on the go, and one day stopped doing that.

In the meantime I have tested Hydrogen in yet another distro, and with 2 more different windows managers, thinking of some Qt whim... I mean I was not playing a prank here...

I think there is more to this story, and it might happen that I reappear in this forum in a couple of months saying "hey guys, what happened was...". At the moment, all I can say is sorry; this is probably the most embarrassing thing that's happened to me since I started using Internet by the end of the nineties.

Also, maybe it would be a good idea to delete this thread, in order not to intoxicate the Internet with false information? And the Github ticket too? I'll go and delete it in a while unless otherwise instructed (maybe there is a 'weirdo' label available for this kind of issues?).

Sorry again and now if you forgive me I'll go to take my medication...
