MIDI Export Incorrect And Unusable

I wrote a quick midi test piece and set the midi note values to...

BD C1, Snr D1, HH F#1, HiTom D2, MidTom B1 and LowTom G1.

I then exported midi and loaded it into three different Daws. Each Daw showed the midi notes were incorrect.

In all three DAWs they were...   BD C2, Snr E2, HH F#2, HiTom A2, MidTom G2 and LowTom F2.

Other than the BD and HH being just an octave off, the others were completely incorrect.  Again, this was checked in three different DAWs.

I believe I recall a similar situation with Hydrogen years ago ?

Hi!

Thanks for reporting the issue. In general, it is better to report bugs at https://github.com/hydrogen-music/hydrogen. This makes it easier for us to get (and maintain) an overview.

As a coincidence, i'm currently working on similiar problems in hydrogen. For instance the current development version of hydrogen displays the midi note value (e.g. 36) instead of the octave notation, which makes it a little bit clearer to users what will be exported. In addition, i've changed the default song file and added default values for midi out notes.

You're saying that "others were completely incorrect". This is new to me.. could you describe this in more detail? What is the midi out value in hydrogen, and what is the resulting note in the midi file?

Hi,

Sorry about that, I'm not familiar with github. I'll try to look at it later.  If it will help I'll try to post a thread there.

Firstly I did a fresh install this morning.  And this is what I get.

1. The GM drum kit loads first and ALL the note values are set to C3.

2. I wrote a quick beat (BD, SNR and HH) and saved it to midi. Loaded it into the DAW and ALL the notes in the DAW were C4.  (an octave higher)

3. I then set the note values in Hydrogen for the BD, SNR and HH to C3, D3 and F#3. Saved it to midi, loaded it to the DAW and it was correct. BD = C4, SNR = D4 and HH = F#4. (Though again an octave higher)

Now here are the problems

4. I switched to the TR808 Kit. That kit seems to have it's note values set (as opposed to the GM were all note values are just C3).  But when I switched back to GM instead of the GM kit having the note values I had set it retained the note values of the TR808. So I have the GM Kit loaded, but with TR808 note values. I tried a few times but the GM always loaded from then on with the TR808 note values. My note values were lost.

5. I then quit Hydrogen and restarted it and the GM Kit went back to ALL notes set to C3 again !

6. I don't see any way of Saving a Kit, there is a load, delete, export, properties (right click) but no save.   There is a 'save library' under instruments but all that is, is a blank form to fill out. There seems to be no save feature for Drum Kits. If you make changes to sounds and or midi note values how do you save that ?

7. When you quite, you get a "The document contains unsaved changes.  Do you want to save the changes?"  But what does that mean ?  What document ?  Is it saving the song, pattern, drm kit, all or none ?

Obviously you have to be able to load and save drum kits that retain all information. And not redo all that info every time you load Hydrogen. Also I'll add there is nothing in the manual about setting midi note values.  Or how to make a Custom Kit.

Everyone who is exporting midi files to their DAWs will need to be able to set and save midi note values to match their software, equipment and situation.

Thank you, if I can help further or you need further testing let me know....

Mauser,

I did another fresh install. And now this time Hydrogen seems to be working fine.   I don't know why this is but I wanted to let you know so as you don't waste your time looking into this.

One thing though, please add a right click save library (drum kit) feature so we don't have to refill the info box (insrtuments/save library) every time we make a change to a drum kit.

If I right click on a kit under 'sound library' on the right side there is load, export, properties and delete but no save feature.

Thank you...

I'm using Hydrogen 097 on a win 7 64bit pc

Hi SG,

thanks for your feedback!

About the "Save library" feature: You have luck, this is already contained in the current development version of hydrogen (which will become Hydrogen 1.0). The feature needs a little work (currently it is only accessible from the menu at the top), but it will be there with the next release.

Thank you Mauser.

I'll look forward to Hydrogen 1.0
