Using instrument layers

I have a bunch of samples that were created for the purpose of layers. For instance, my kick drum has 16 different samples for layering that were recorded at different actual analogue velocities. Because of this, the original samples go from being quiet to being loud.

The problem is that when I load them into an instrument in Hydrogen, it seems like Hydrogen automatically sets the volume levels for each layer. So now I have my low velocity samples, which were already quiet, being loaded in with Hydrogen automatically lowering the volume. That makes it so quiet I can't even hear it at all, and they were originally recorded with the volume level that is meant for that velocity.

If I don't change the velocity settings at all, it will only play the top layer, which is the loudest. So does anyone know if there is a way to load my samples as layers and set their individual velocity triggers, but also be able to keep the original volume levels?

yes, this is a problem. layers in hydrogen are in dependent to a defined velocity. in your case the hydrogen layer-velocity system is unusable. a tip could be, to normalise all samples for example to -3 db. than the hydrogen layer system will do a good job.

Thanks for the quick reply. I had considered normalizing all samples, but I was hoping I was overlooking something so that I wouldn't have to. I guess I'll get to work on that. Thank you.

Thank you for your quick reply. I was hoping to not have to do that, but I think that will be a good fix. Thanks a lot.

Well, I normalized over 250 samples, which took forever. It worked great, though. Thank you.

Instead of normalizing your samples, you should use the gain control for each layer to compensate. I created a script to optimize layer gain here at loopernova.com/hydrogen to automagically do this.
