saving drumkit settings for a roland td6

Sorry if this is too much of a newbie question.  I wasn't sure which terms to use to search for an answer.  Can I use Hydrogen to interface directly to a roland td6 drumset with a midi to usb cable - and then save my drum settings for the kit (which I've modified on the roland td6).  That is my main goal first - although the program looks very interesting to make sound tracks as well.

Also - when I first installed hyrdrogen - it asked about installing something called jackxxxx (cant remember the name exactly).  Do I definitely need this to make it work with a dell laptop and roland td6?  If so - is there some other way to install it since it doesnt prompt for it anymore?

thanks in advance for any help.

OK - I googled and found "Jack" - but not sure which driver to connect it to.  When I run what it says in the directions -to see the drivers it can connect to I get...

Can I really use any of these with Jack (and eventually Hydrogen)?

hi

yes you need jack, and you should install the jack version that is supplied with Hydrogen when you download it

what exactly do you mean with 'saving modifications you made on the td6 drumkit' ?  i'm guessing those are settings you have made on the TD6 that affect the way the TD6's built-in samples sound, correct ?

if that is the case there is no way to store these changes into hydrogen

hydrogen allows you to send midi to any midi device, but there is no communication from the midi device back to Hydrogen

what you could do is record the output of the TD6, play your modified samples and then create a custom hydrogen drumkit.  that way you will have your tweaked sounds available in Hydrogen

hope this helps!

Here's what I mean by saving modifications on the td6.  There are 199 drumkits defined on the td6.  Each kit defines what sound will play for each of the pads (triggers). You can pick from 1024 instruments. You can also set pitch, delay, and other settings. What I am looking for is a way to save all these settings - as the td6 has a battery which will eventually go out.   At this point I'm not so interested in recording the output playing - just all the settings (becausa a lot of time and effort is used to set these how you want them - and want to be able to easily recover if the data is lost).  If hydrogen is not the tool for this - then what it?  The drumkit manual does talk about a bulk dump.   "Saving Data to an External MIDI Device (Bulk Dump) - You can save the TD-6s drum kits, songs, general settings and more to an external Midi Sequencer".

So I bought a Midi to Usb cable and would like to learn how to save the settings.

thanks in advance for your help.

hi,

under jack you will become best audio performance and shortest latency by using asio. the asio4all driver http://www.asio4all.com/ work very good with most build in soundcards.

example jackd startup:

jackd.exe -S -R -d portaudio -d ASIO::ASIO4ALL v2 -r 48000 -p 128

also you can install the newest jack driver from http://jackaudio.org/download . current version is 1.9.8. if you start hydrogen against jackd 1.9.8 hydrogen will crash immediately. to prevent this crash you have simple to remove the libjackd.dll from your hydrogen installation root. after this hydrogen run without any problems with all jack versions.
