hydrogen kills sound from other applications

I have Hydrogen 0.9.6 on Linux Mint (Debian serived).

I have found that sound works fine on all applications (Banshee, VLC, via iplayer/youtube on browser etc), UNTIL I run hydrogen.

Sound stops dead on any other application.
Hydrogen works okay.

Sound will not work on other applications unles I restart PC.

Interesting!

Suggestions to start to get to root of this?

my guess is that you have configured Hydrogen to use jack (or the audio driver is set to 'auto')

in this case jack will 'take over' the audio card when it starts an all non-jack apps wont be able to access the sound card any more

if you dont really need jack, you can set the audio driver to ALSA and your problem should be fixed

(see this part of the manual)

That didn't seem to work.

Does the fact that the preferrences doesn't seem to remember the settings I've made indicate anything?

if you open the hydrogen config file (.hydrogen/hydrogen.conf) you should see this if

 <audio_engine>

  <audio_driver>Jack</audio_driver>

after you change the driver to ALSA you should see this change in the hydrogen.conf file

try to hit the 'restart output' after you change the driver from Jack to ALSA, what does that do ?  do you get a mesage ?

next hit the OK button, close H2 and reopen it

Hi,

new here, great app.

But I have the same problem. Running Ubuntu 14.4, Hydrogen 0.9.6beta3.

My audio driver settings show "Auto". I can't change them to ALSA, or better said, when I reopen the dialog, it's back to Auto. I changed it in the config file from Auto to ALSA  and got "unknown driver" when I tried to run Hydrogen.

(I can get back sound for other applications without restarting the computer by using "System├╝berwachung" and ending the process "jackd".)

Any ideas?
